Best Places to Take Summer Family Photos in Castle Rock

If you’re searching for the best places to take summer family photos in Castle Rock, you hit the jackpot by living here. Seriously. Between the endless open spaces, scenic trails, gorgeous sunsets, and charming downtown streets, Castle Rock is basically one giant outdoor photo studio.

But here’s what I love most about these locations: they’re kid-friendly.

And by kid-friendly, I mean there’s room for your children to be children.

Family Photos Don’t Have to Mean Standing Still

If you’re raising a crew of boys like I am, you know sitting perfectly still and smiling at a camera isn’t exactly their dream afternoon. And it will eventually drive you, or in my case, me, to tears trying to get the perfect picture. They want to run. They want to climb. They want to investigate every stick, bug, rock, and mysterious hole they find along the trail.

Honestly? That’s my favorite kind of session. I love capturing them in the midst of their adventure. That is where the real magic happens. And that is where I really see the spirit of my boys.

The wide-open spaces around Castle Rock allow kids to explore, play, and be themselves while I capture the wild, beautiful chaos that makes your family uniquely yours. The best photos rarely happen when everyone is standing perfectly posed. And frankly, I gave up a long time ago trying to get my family to look like something they are not. In my opinion, the best photos happen when your daughter is twirling through a field, your son is showing me his latest stick collection or the coolest rock, and everyone forgets they’re being photographed.

My Favorite Family Photo Locations Around Castle Rock

As a Castle Rock family photographer, I’m often asked where the best outdoor locations are for summer sessions. Here are some of my favorites that deliver gorgeous scenery, dreamy evening light, and plenty of room for little adventurers to do their thing and explore.

Dawson Butte Ranch Open Space and Trail

If I had to choose a favorite, Dawson Butte Ranch would always be near the top of the list.

This location has everything Colorado dreams are made of: expansive views, rolling fields, mountain vistas, and sunsets that make photographers ridiculously happy.

It’s one of the best places to take summer family photos in Castle Rock if you’re looking for that classic Colorado look. During spring and early fall, you’ll often find wildflowers sprinkled throughout the landscape, and the cooler temperatures make exploring even more enjoyable.

Bonus points for all the space kids have to roam without feeling like they’re trapped in a photo session.

Columbine Open Space and Trail

Columbine Open Space is one of those locations that people often overlook, which makes me love it even more.

The rolling grasslands, winding trails, and golden-hour light are absolutely beautiful. Add in the historic farm buildings, and suddenly you’ve got a little rustic Colorado charm mixed into your gallery.

It’s peaceful, scenic, and gives your photos that “we actually live in Colorado” feel.

Castlewood Canyon State Park

Want to turn family photos into a mini adventure?

Castlewood Canyon is your place.

With dramatic canyon walls, rugged trails, rock formations, and endless textures, it’s one of the most unique locations near Castle Rock. Kids love exploring here, and parents love that it doesn’t feel like a typical photo session.

Honestly, if your family enjoys hiking, exploring, and getting a little dirt on their shoes, this location is hard to beat.

Downtown Castle Rock

Not every family session needs mountain views and open fields.

Sometimes you want colorful murals, brick buildings, charming storefronts, rustic doorways, twinkle lights, and a little urban personality.

Downtown Castle Rock offers all of that and more.

The creek winding through downtown creates fun spots for kids to explore, while the variety of textures and backdrops means your final gallery feels incredibly diverse. One block can give us colorful murals, historic architecture, and charming alleyways all within a few minutes.

Plus, little adventures are excellent distractions while I work my camera magic.

Gateway Mesa Open Space

Gateway Mesa is one of my favorite recommendations for families who want stunning scenery without committing to a major hike.

The open trails, beautiful views, and incredible sunsets make it one of the best places to take summer family photos in Castle Rock.

And if you’re someone who feels slightly awkward having your photos taken while random strangers walk by, you’ll appreciate how peaceful and quiet this location tends to be.

No audience required.

Quarry Mesa Open Space

Quarry Mesa offers beautiful elevated views, peaceful trails, and a quieter atmosphere that many families love.

It’s one of those locations where you can slow down, enjoy the scenery, and let the kids explore without feeling rushed. The natural beauty speaks for itself, creating a timeless backdrop that never goes out of style.

Hidden Mesa Open Space and Trails

The name says it all.

Hidden Mesa feels like a little escape from everyday life. The trails, open spaces, and scenic overlooks create endless opportunities for genuine moments and natural interactions.

It’s perfect for families who love exploring together and aren’t afraid of a little adventure.

Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space

Lost Canyon Ranch is one of Castle Rock’s hidden treasures.

The rolling hills, native grasses, and wide-open spaces create a classic Colorado backdrop that works beautifully for family portraits. It feels peaceful, secluded, and wonderfully Colorado.

In other words, it’s pretty much photographer heaven.
